The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is now: 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline

988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. While some areas may be currently able to connect to the Lifeline by dialing 988, this dialing code will be available to everyone across the United States starting on July 16, 2022.

The Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones, and best practices for professionals.

What happens when you call the Lifeline?

  1. First, you will hear an automated message featuring additional options while your call is routed to your local Lifeline network crisis center.
  2. You will then hear music while the Lifeline directs your call to the crisis center nearest you.
  3. A trained crisis center counselor will answer your call and help you; they will offer you referrals for mental health services if needed.

Lifeline Chat is a service of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, connecting individuals with counselors for emotional support and other services via web chat.
